19 members, Columbia Heights High School STRIVE students Dinne Kinchelow, Shaniah Bates, and Sierra Martin, and Columbia Heights High School STRIVE coordinator Scott Roehm heard Twin Cities Rotoract representative Laura Skubic (pictured) describe the Rotoract club and its members and activities. Rotoract, a separate Rotary clubs for members ages 18-30, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Laura invited members to attend its next meeting, December 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Whole Foods in downtown Minneapolis, and invited the club to considering sponsoring a Rotoract member.

Meeting of 12.13.2017
22 members, visiting Rotarian Tom Yuzer of the Menifee, CA Rotary Club, and guest Chief Lenny Austin of the Columbia Heights Police Department heard Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo give his annual summary for the county's Year in Crime. Tony mentioned an increase in felonies over 2016, statistics for child-protection and juvenile cases, and the good work of the Veterans' court.
 
President Wysopal summarized last week's club board meeting, and after hearing information supplied by Secretary Tholkes, ratified the board's recommendation of participation in the Surgical Room Global Grant Project sponsored by clubs in Bahia Province, Brazil, a contribution of $1,050.00.

  • Club service project assisting with toy-wrapping at Southern Anoka County Assistance in Columbia Heights on Friday, Dec. 15, from 2:00-4:00 pm. 
  • The Kids In Need inventory with Fridley and Columbia Heights STRIVE students from 10:00 to 3:00 pm Saturday at their warehouse in Roseville.

22 members, Columbia Heights STRIVE students Danny Castro and Erika Hernandez, Columbia Heights STRIVE coordinator Scott Roehm, Junior Achievement guest Tom O'Hearn, and exchange student Pascal Boehner heard guest speaker Ives Whitman, mens' therapist in the Domestic Violence program at Lee Carlson Centers,speak about the program at the breakfast meeting of December 20, the last scheduled in 2017. 
 
Whitman described his background for the position, the areas of focus for the program, the behavioral principles on which it is based, the characteristics of the men entering program (usually by court order), and the changes sought in their behavior.
 
In other actions, the meeting approved the slate of club officer candidates for the 2018-19 year:

President-Elect: Brian Weierke
Secretary: Bob Tholkes
Treasurer: Scott Bardell
 
As Past President, President Wally Wysopal will remain on the club Board of Directors, replacing current Past President Kristin Stuenkel. Nominees Zac Hoang and Amy Wild will replace outgoing directors Steve Klaers and Toni Craft.
 
Announcements:
  • Stuenkel reported that she had notified the Twin cities Rotoract Club of the $200 in scholarship funds committed for its use.
  • Member Patty Halvorson handed out flyers for the Lee Carlson Center's March 22 Chili cook-off and beer-tasting, which the club is helping to sponsor.
  • President Wysopal thanked the volunteers to assisted at the SACA toy distribution on Dec, 15, and at the kids In Need inventory on December 16.
 
Meeting of 01.03.2018
20 members, exchange student Pascal Boehner, and visiting Rotarian Mike Neeley of Shoreview-New Brighton Rotary heard new member Lacey Anderson, Quality Manager at Talecris Plasma Resources of Fridley give her very interesting and informative classification talk, touching on her background, education, family, and career in the plasma resources field-- an unusual outcome for an Anthropology major! The details of working in her occupation were new for the group, and drew significant interest.

  • President Wysopal awarded to Gordy Backlund his Paul Harris Foundation pin, recognizing Gordy's 6th accumulation of $1000.00 in contributions to TRF.
  • President Wysopal promoted the District 5960 2017-18 midterm session on Jan. 13 at Hamilne U. in St. Paul and issued a reminder of the club assembly on Jan. 31, which will forward preparations for the July 19 golf fundraiser, which new member Greg Schraufnagel is spearheading.
  • Scott Lund provided a reminder of the Fridley Lions annual winter food, wine and beer sampling fundraiser at Banquets of Minnesota on Feb. 16.
  • Peggy Flathmann provided a reminder of the Fridley Schools Foundation gala on Jan. 25, also a fundraiser, for which the club has donated a table which, 8 members and their guests may fill at no charge.
  • Steve Klaers invited members to assist on the STRIVE trip to MCTC on Jan. 18.
