Gordy Backlund, who accepted them on the club's behalf, announced that the club received two awards for 2017-18 at the District 5960 Foundation Celebration on Nov. 10: a certificate of appreciation for its support of Polio Plus, and for placing third in the district among medium-sized clubs in Polio Plus giving.
 
Retiring Fridley Community Education Director Toni Craft was farewelled; she will be replaced as director and as a member by incoming director Stephen Keeler.
 
Bob Freed of Arden Hills-Shoreview Rotary, who presented in June about that club’s sewing school project in India, returned to ask for a donation to the project. It will be taken up by the club board at its meeting next week.
 
Fridley Police is collecting cash or donations of winter clothing for kids until early December.
 
Donations are sought for the Metro North Adult Basic Ed winter clothing distribution program in our service area. They will be accepted all through the winter. They can be brought to the breakfast and given to Kristen or Toni.
The first STRIVE field trip, to Anoka Tech, takes place tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 29. Volunteers to accompany the trip are sought. See Steve Klaers or John Niewald.
 
District 5960 invites all members to attend a performance of “Black Nativity” at 4 pm on Sunday, December 2nd, at the Penumbra Theatre in St. Paul. Ticket price is $36. More information about the theater and the performance is at www.penumbratheatre.org. Attendees are invited to dine after at Dixie’s on Grand, 695 Grand Avenue, St. Paul.
 
The club's quarterly service project will be on Tuesday, Dec. 4: food sorting at Southern Anoka Community Assistance in Columbia Heights from 3:30 to 5:30. Please sign up on the sheet provided. A holiday gathering will follow, at Crooner’sthe nearby Sarna's Grill.
 
The club will provide bellringing services for the Salvation Army on Dec. 5, 12, and 19 at Sam's Club in Fridley. Volunteers are needed- see Wally Wysopal.
 
Steve Klaers announced that a meeting for members participating in the new STRIVE mentoring program will be held after next week’s breakfast.
 
District 5960 has arranged a Group Cultural Exchange next spring with District 1860 in Germany. This will be approximately a two-week trip. We expect the German team here in 2019-20 Rotary Year . The outbound team to Germany will travel the end of May (21st-31st).  If you are interested in more information or to get an application, please go to: https://rotary5960.org/Page/group-cultural-exchange. The deadline for receipt of the applications is December 7, 2018.
 
The STRIVE students will participate in the Kids in Need inventory on Saturday, Dec. 15, at its warehouse, 2719 Patton Rd, Roseville. Volunteers for the outing are sought. See Steve Klaers or John Niewald.
 
President Josh Lund passed out invitations for the Suits & Hearts Benefit Gala, rescheduled for January 19. See suitsandhearts.org for tickets and information.
 
President Lund also described a possible fundraiser: serving as concessionaires at Minnesota Twins games in 2019. Ten dates would be required.The deadline for application is Feb. 1.
 
Save the date: “Taste of Fridley”, a fundraiser for the spring Fridley Middle School East Coast Trip, will be held on Friday, March 8,, from 6 to 9 pm at Banquets of Minnesota in Fridley.
