19 members, including 5 on Zoom, heard new member “Magic Brad” Gudim leave the rabbit in the hat and instead describe his almost lifelong (“I wasted the first five years of my life”) efforts, interrupted only briefly as a young adult for employment in drafting, to weave his talents in magic and marketing into a solid career as an entrepreneur. He described his formula for success as the devising of strategies for promotion with an emphasis on collaboration with organizations, both profit and non-profit, in the achievement of mutual goals, a process he now pursues primarily on the internet. Rotary attracted Brad for its community-based ethic of service.
Steve Klaers announced that the first STRIVE get-together with Columbia Heights High School students, which took place last week, was successful. About 17 students are enrolled. Member Kristen Stuenkel also attended. New member “Magic Brad” Gudim has signed on as a mentor. Mentors will be sought for Columbia Heights, which at present lacks a mentor program.
A musical service celebrating the long life and career in music of Henry Smith, spouse of member Norma Jean Falink, is scheduled (COVID permitting) for Monday, November 22, at Colonial Church of Edina, at 2 p.m. The club board voted in October to provide a memorial, which, at Norma Jean’s suggestion will be a contribution to Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies, which Henry helped found.
The club board meets next on Dec. 1 at 9:00 a.m. at Fridley City Hall. All members are welcome to attend.
Bellringing at Sam’s Club  in Fridley for the Salvation Army will take place on Dec. 1, 8, and 15. Bellringing slots at present are filled.
Klaers reminded that the STRIVE students’ first field trip is scheduled for Friday, December 3. Rotarians are as always invited. Contact Steve at 612-599-8103.
Speaker on November 17: Member Kristen Stuenkel will provide an update on the club’s Operation Pollination activities.
