PROGRAMS

February 21- (Thanks Erik Johnston!) 14 members, and guest Pastor Cassie, listened to long time Fridley resident Dave Ostwald discuss the Fridley Lions program. Ostwald, a Lion member since 2017, and midway through his year term as president, recounted the purpose of the club embodied by the motto, “We Serve.” Ostwald discussed the many ways in which the Lion’s club supports the community, mainly through distribution of proceeds from their charitable gambling operations, as well as conducting various community activities. Ostwald reported over $4 million in community giving since 2009 and over $5 million since they began their charitable gambling program. Recipients of the funds include county programs, food shelves, seniors, with area schools being their largest recipients of around 44% of their donations. He mentioned their upcoming fundraiser the Winter Warm-up to be held this Friday evening.

February 28 (Thanks Gordon Backlund!) 10 members and guests Heather Tuttle and Stephen Ward of Prodeo Academy in Columbia Heights and Columbia Heights High School STRIVE coordinator Scott Roehm with students Leslie, Solvel, and Mattie, heard former member and CPA Jere Caputa speak about changes to federal and state tax codes for taxes due April 15, 2024. Tuttle and Ward described the Academy’s recent field trip to a concert for music education and received the club’s donation of $525.00 through the Healthy Youth Foundation in support.
