PROGRAM
 
19 members, including 6 on Zoom, visiting Rotarian Mike Neeley of New Brighton/Mounds View Rotary, guests Scott Roehm, STRIVE coordinator at Columbia Heights High School and Columbia Heights STRIVE students Hanan Hussein, Amatl Rinj, Adhel Rinj, and Yasmin Mohamed heard Mindy Meisner, Anoka County Commissioner for our service area, describe the many functional roles of the county government and the work of the several committees (7!) on which she serves. Follow up questions for the commissioner focused on taxation, and Ms. Meisner emphasized the need for judges to come forward for this year’s elections.
 
ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
Craig Malm thanked member Brian Weierke and the Fridley Police Department for making possible last weekend the distribution of bikes to Fridley kids.
 
Amada Simula and Kristen Stuenkel announced a GoFundMe campaign to help Columbia Heights’ Sister City (Lomianki, Poland) raise funds for Ukrainian relief.
 
Steve Klaers announced that the final STRIVE mentor meeting of the school year will take place on Tuesday, May 17, at Fridley High School. Contact Steve at 612-599-8103 for information.
 
Bob Olsen, sporting his usual Florida tan, announced that 8 to 10 volunteers and sponsors will be needed for resumption of the Rotary-sponsored Fun Run at Fridley 49er Days on June 16.
 
REMINDERS
 
Scholarship presentation assemblies at Columbia Heights and Fridley High Schools are scheduled for tonight, Wednesday, May 11, and Thursday, May 19, respectively. Members are invited to attend the assemblies, at which STRIVE awards are presented. Mark Grotewold has agreed to present the STRIVE scholarships at Columbia Heights. Steve Klaers and Josh Callahan will present at Fridley. Contact Steve Klaers at 612-599-8103 for information.
 
The normal weekly breakfast meetings will be replaced by lunch meetings at the Refuge Golf Club, 21250 Yellow Pine St NW, Oak Grove, MN, the site of the July Golf Classic fundraiser. Complementary lunches and golf will be provided for invited prospective members. Members who choose to golf after the meeting can do so at a discounted rate of $45.00. The lunches will begin at 11:30. Meetings are scheduled for May 25, June 29, July 27, and August 24. Members are requested to help identify prospective members to invite, particularly owners of local businesses. President Don Archibeque circulated an email list on May 6.
