PROGRAM
 
18 members heard Nathan Allen of Bio Techne in Minneapolis describe two aspects of regenerative medicine: cell and gene therapy and “car tee” therapy, both being researched as palliatives for a range of degenerative diseases for which there is presently no cure. Allen cited the case of a juvenile victim of leukemia whose life was saved through stem cell therapy.   
 
ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
Steve Klaers announced that 11 mentors have been lined up for the STRIVE program at Fridley High School. Lunches with the Fridley STRIVE students are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. at the high school on Nov. 1, Nov. 15, Nov. 30, and Dec. 13.  Klaers and members MagicBrad Gudim, Kim Hiel, Additional Mike Oakley, and Greg Schraufnagel attended the first lunch last Wednesday. Additional mentors for the STRIVE students are sought. Contact Klaers at 612-599-8103.  
 
Past President Brian Weierke presented a photo of the new club-sponsored school safety signs at Fridley Public Schools.  A photo op is planned for next Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 5:15 at the sign near Fridley Middle School, 6100 W Moore Lake Dr, to which all members are invited.
 
The club board will hold a special meeting next Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 8:30 a.m. at Room 116, Fridley Community Center, 6085 7th Avenue NE, to consider the requests for financial assistance received in the past few months. Members are welcome to attend.
 
Social Committee Scott Lund announced that the after-dinner entertainer at next week’s Charter Dinner (see Reminder below) will be pianist Adam Davis.
 
Gordon Backlund announced that the club’s annual bellringing during the holiday season will again take place at Sam’s Club, 8150 University Avenue NE in Fridley, from 4-7 p.m. on the three Wednesdays in December before Christmas. A sign-up sheet for 1 ½ hour time blocks will be circulated. Contact Backlund at 612-296-0375 to participate.
 
Save The Date: the annual district 5960 conference is scheduled for April 29, 2023, a joint conference with District 5950 at Madden’s Golf Resort on Gull Lake in Brainerd.

The Columbia Heights High School Alumni Scholarship Foundation will hold its annual banquet and fundraiser on Thursday evening, October 28, at Jax in Minneapolis. Contact the school or member Vern Hoium about tickets.
 
Member Erik Johnston invites members to assist at the Columbia Heights “Truck or Treat” event on Saturday, October 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Huset Park East.

The annual Charter Dinner is scheduled for Wednesday, November 2, at Banquets of Minnesota in Fridley, and will feature Rotary District 5960 Governor Dayna Quigley and after-dinner musical entertainment. Doors open at 5:30, dinner at 7; cost, $40.00. Members can sign up at a breakfast or contact social committee Scott Lund at scott.lund@comcast.net.
 
President Kim Hiel reminded that this past week she emailed to members this year’s Rotary Visioning Survey. Results will be offered at the November 9 breakfast.
